Maury Moss Agate Beds
The forest around Maury Moss Agate Beds looks wiped clean, but the ground still hides plenty of treasure. The only clue you’re close is a tiny sign that pops up on the side of the road like it’s tired of doing all the work. Walk the open hills, scan the exposed soil, and let the stones reveal themselves at their own pace near the end in Central Oregon.
Getting there
The road feels empty until that tiny sign appears and silently dares you to turn. Follow it in and pull into the little parking area that barely admits it’s a parking area. The hills sit open, the air dries out fast, and everything screams bring water unless you enjoy chaos near the end in Central Oregon.
Walk straight past the end of the lot and start scanning the ground. If you’ve got 4×4, take the dirt road that drops from the lot and keep right until a small cluster of pine trees pops up. On the left, you’ll see the dig-out holes from past hunters. Surface collecting here is wild — large agate shards sit on top like they’re waiting for roll call. We even stumbled on an owl pellet acting like it owned the place. The land stays exposed, the heat jumps fast, and the good pieces show themselves if you keep moving.
