Paleo Site

Rockhounding Payson Arizona Paleo Site Monument is less about sparkling crystals and more about digging into deep time. This family-friendly fossil site gives you the chance to uncover trilobites, brachiopods, and ancient coral right in the dirt. It’s a spot where kids can play paleontologist, adults can nerd out on geology, and everyone leaves with a little piece of prehistoric Arizona. The Paleo Site may not glitter like Diamond Point, but it delivers something even cooler—fossils that tell the story of a world long gone.

The Paleo Site Monument is one of the easiest Payson rockhounding spots to reach. From downtown Payson, head east on Highway 260 for about 13 miles. Look for a small parking pull-off on the right side of the road, marked with a sign for the Paleo Site.

The site itself is a short walk from the parking area, with exposed dirt piles and rock beds right out in the open. Unlike Diamond Point or Fire Control Road, you don’t need a 4×4 here—any vehicle can make the drive, and the access is family-friendly.

Because it sits right along the highway, the Paleo Site makes a great stop whether you’re spending the day in Payson or road-tripping along the Mogollon Rim.
